Interruptions is an interactive sculpture in response to emergency broadcast system tests. Research on the system in history, popular media, and recorded demonstrations informed a visual response to the look, feel and tone of alert messages. The documentation captures a scene in which a child’s interaction with an interactive sculpture causes the intrusion of an emergency alert into regular children’s programming. Contact is detected by an infrared stereo camera triggering visual artifacts, noise, and splices of emergency alert messages to wrap the sculpture. In the moment of contact, the floor is wiped of the linear path and the child is lost spatially in a field of red fluid noise and a spiral of changing alert messages.
